I've been a US resident since 1997. When I first moved here I was under the impression that my Canadian RRSP was no busines to the US tax regime unless I was to 1. Try and make a contribution. (Which I have not) or 2. Withdraw money from it (which I have not).
I have since become a US citizen ( just recently) and have only worked in the US since moving in 1997.
Recently I was told by my accountant that I am and was suppose to disclose my RSSP to the US tax regime every year here since moving.
My take on the whole thing is that I should not have to worry about this until I start drawing money from the account when I retire at which point common sense would dictate that I pay my tax in Canada and at that time report to the US whatever income and Canadian tax I paid from it on my us tax return.
Can you help to answer a few questions:
1. Do I have to disclose my RRSP to the IRS now? I'm not raedy to draw from it yet.
2. If so what do I have to disclose, and how? I'm not even sure i have account info that dates back to when i moved here. Remember I have made no contributions since the time I moved here.
3. How do I report the income when I do retire (when I'm55years + of age), can't I just report the income when I take it? This is a lot of money for me and I can't afford to make mistakes.
I hope this post will give me some ideas, my current plan is not do anything until I draw the money from the account.
Is this the Right thing to do?

1. Yes, you should have been reporting their existence since the day you arrived in US, regardless of whether you were taking money out or not. Contributions don't matter eitehr way.
2. 8891 for the past 6 years. Its all here already. Read.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
