Working 2nd job for US company from Canada

Post by chris1976 »

Hello,
I am a Cdn citizen moving to Canada from the US to take a job with a Canadian company as an employee. I wish to work a 2nd job for a US company, doing all work in Canada. What is the best way to proceed? Should I incorporate? Is it possible to be self-employed in Canada billing the US company and a Cdn employee at the same time?

Many thanks.

Since you are a CND citizen you have no trouble working in Canada as either an employee or self employed subcontractor. You can do both simultaneously. Should you incorporated probably not unless you have a large billing amount the cost if incorporation are so that it makes very little difference in tax savings especially if you pull out the money from the corp to live on, but it depends on the volume. Since your work is from US the corp will not qualify for the small business tax rate of approx 18% so I would receommend no corp, if your doing over $30K a yr you have to register for GST no matter if your inc or not.
