Lived in the US for 7 years. I cut ties when I moved to the US. Moved back to Canada in mid-2011.
How do I go about filing taxes - do I file US for the portion of the year I was in the US (i.e. report only my American income) and Canadian for the portion I was in Canada (reporting only Canadian and not the US)?
My wife is an American citizen (Canadian permanent resident). Does the same apply to her??
Also, we sold an apartment in the U.S. at a loss (in my wife's name) in 2011 (but after we moved to Canada). Do we have to file anything or report anything relating to the sale of the apartment in Canada?
Thank you in advance.

Your wife will always fule in US forever, so her move doesn't affect her US taxes.
You have the choice of filing full year in US of partial. Since you are married and your wife will file full year, you might as well join her.
Regrdless, you are both considered newcomers to canada, so evertything you owned whn you arrived in canada has a fresh value for Cdn tax purposes, including the US property. You must eveluate the property on the day you arrived, and then when sold, to calculate the loss for Cdn tax purposes..

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
