Required forms for backfiling US taxes from Canada

Post by montesjesse »

Sorry to be a repeat, but I'm hoping someone can tell me exactly what forms I need to file for my situation. I am a dual citizen living and working in Canada, and I have not backfiled any of my US taxes since I moved here 13 years ago. I have a TFSA, RSP, as well as a RESP for my daughter.

I've been told that I need to fill out an FBAR, 3520, and an 8891. I probably need a 1040 as well. And all these forms need to be filled out for the past 6 years. Is this it? Am I missing something?

The 1040 was automatic, that is why it was not mentionned. Other schedules may be needed depending on income.

And in order to avoid paying US tax, you will need to exclude wages (Form 2555) and/or get foreign tax credit (multple forms 1116).
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Nelsona, thanks for the quick reply. So to clarify, do I need the following forms for each of the six years that I want to backfile?
1040, TDF 90-22.1, 3520, 2555, 1116 (multiple forms)

And will I need each of these forms for future filings as well?
