Tax implications - TN or J-1 Visa

Post by jj14 »

Hi I am a Canadian who has received a 2 year fellowship in the US and my employer wants to know if I would like to apply for the TN or J1 visa. There is a good possibility of staying on with the organization after the 2 years, so I may be in the US for a while. I am wondering about the tax implications with each visa and if one is more beneficial than the other.

Thanks

TN allows you to break CDn ties immediately, so you will no longer be subject to CDn taxation.

J1 technically does ot (althouh some have been successful), so any tax savings you have in US are taken by canada.

J1 does not pay SS for 2 years, but you might want to stat fnding your SS account if you are going to stay.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
