Canadian with GC working for US company

Post by orangeathome »

I am Canadian with GC and am planning on moving back to Canada very soon. Not planning on giving up the GC.

I have been offered a job a US company and will be paid in US dollars. I'm not sure how they're setting me up as an employee and getting me benefits. I have not signed any forms such as W9s or W8BEN.

I'm their first person that they're hiring in Canada so I feel as if I'm helping them out. Is it better if they pay me as a contractor (maybe W8BEN) and not take any deductions out? In this case I pay my taxes in Canada for 2011? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

You would file a w-9. You will need to report in US amd canada.
You should be a contarctor, and have nothing withheld.

Would this mean that I pay double taxes? I don't want to find that out at the end of the year.

You may pay tax in both countries, but it will end up being at the Cdn/Prov rate overall.

That's what you get by keeping GC.
