I am currently filing my 2009 Canadian tax return and have some question about my status. I am a Canadian citizen working in the US in 2009. I had a H1B visa and paid Social Security and Medicare for all of 2009. I am single and have no spouse.
However, I have residential ties in Canada during 2009 (owned a property with my parents), and severed the ties in the middle of 2009. I only transferred the property to my parents and did not sell it.
Base on this, can I be considered as a non-resident of Canada for 2009?
Question about non-residency in Canada

You are non-resident from the day yopu moved to US to work in H1 status.
Owniong property is insufficient to be considered resident if you live and work in a treaty country like US.
You are non-resident for all of 2009, and if you moved before 2009, you should amend that years return to indicate departure then.
Read the CRA emigrants guide and follow the requirements outlined therein.

After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
