Can my Wife use her College student Son's deductions?

Post by Georgetowner »

My wife's son is 21 and his Birthday is in April. He's a full time college student (fourth year) but also worked part time in 2009 and had an income of around $20,000. Can my wife use his personal and/or college deductions, or is he required to use his own deductions because he had income?

Even though he had income, he lives at home, and is a dependent. She also paid the majority of his tuition.

This is not a cross-border issue.

Read the lines in guide that apply. Generally he must use up the credit first, then give any leftover to parents for that year only, then only he can use them in future years.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
