Paying US Taxes - Canadian

Post by rfitty55 »

I am a Canadian citizen and myself and family ( 2kids) got our Greencard in August 2008. We were in the US in August for 7 days getting all our paperwork in order. Because of the economic downturn we were not able to secure a job in the US and we stayed in Canada. Needless to say we were disappointed and we held on to our jobs in Canada. We only spent 6 more days in the US in July 2009. I file all my Canadian taxes - joint with my wife. I have not filed any taxes for the US for both 2008 and 2009. Do I need to file. What forms do we use 1040, 1040NR, attachments, 8833, 8843 etc etc etc.
I am not familiar with any of this and I am totally overwhelmed.
Can anyone advise exactly what forms I need to file and how to fill out the forms or do I need professional help. Can anyone recommend a good US / Canada tax accountant in Toronto, Canada. I am told that there will be no dual taxation but I still need to get my affairs in order. HELP PLEASE !!

You need to file as if you were a US resident from the monet you got GC.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
