Moved to US...how to completely pay off HBP

Post by ticktacksir »

Hi,

I moved to the US and had 11000 left on my HBP. I put in $4636 in RRSPs, and thus have 6364.00 left. It says on the website to put it as income to pay it off, but I don't know exactly how to designate it so Revenue Canada would know that that is what it would be for. How would I do that?

Thanks!

What do you mean "generate income". You need to have that amount freom whatever source, and physically pay it back into an RRSP. If you did not do it wiithin 60 days of moving, don't bother its too late.
The unfunded amount will be added to your departure tax return as income.

Ok thanks.

One more thing. I was married in 2008 to a US citizen who never lived in Canada. All the online tax programs want to give her the base 9600 as income...Should I let it, or force it to zero? I lived in Alberta if that means anything.

I know in the US here, she was able to claim me on her taxes even though I never lived down here and get a bigger refund as a result.

She does not have to live in canada for you to be eligible for the amount, but you nneed to report her world income on page one. This will be the figure used to determine if you should get the spousal amount or not.
She shouldn't file a Cdn return, but shpould merely put her inocme on your page 1.
