US / Canadian Tax Advantage

Post by dlj1953 »

I am a US citizen and have an option to accept a two year assignment in British Columbia. Salary would be ~160 K (US) and I would be in Canada at least 330 days a year. Question is, would this really be advantageous to me from a tax perspective to accept this position? Will I pay Canadian tax and get credit from the IRS? If so, if the Canadian tax rate is higher would I get credit for all Canadian tax or just up to the amount I would owe the IRS? Given the previous, would I be able to take the IRS $85,700 Foreign Earned Income on Form 2555?

I'm confused, I need help!!! :?:

You will end up paying your taxes to canada and BC. You will have no tax liability in US, but will get no refund from them either, no matter how much you pay in cdn taxes.

So you need to determine how much you will net on this job, compared to what you net now in your current job.

There are sites that do this... happy hunting.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
