1040 or 1040NR with Form 8840 or 1040NR-EZ

Post by TAXED »

I think I have figured it out but just want to double check. I believe I can file 1040NR-EZ for 2007, but would this be the best way to file.

I had US income for month of Nov and Dec in 2007 on my TN visa. Should I file using 1040 or 1040NR or go with 1040NR-EZ. Will i get anything back, I have $12,000 US imcome for 2007.

I also have Canadian income till Dec 15 from Canadian Employer. For Canada I guess i will file my tax with Canadian + US income.

I will have full year (hopefully) US income in 2008.

Thanks in advance.

I never file the short versions.

To file 1040, you would have to report all your income from canada.

My guess is that 1040NR is the way to go for you this year.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best

Thanks for quick reply nelsona. I really appreciate what you do on this board. You answer questions all day, you have my atmost respect. I'm sure you enjoy helping others.

One more question, I will use 1040NR as per your suggestion, do I report the candaian income that I had for the month of Nov and mid Dec which I earned while in US. Actually I was still working for Candian Emp after i moved, so essentually two jobs for about month and half. I still haven't closed my bank and RRSP accounts in Canada.

When I file my Canadian taxes do I report US imcome for two months as world income or not mention it at all.

One mor question. My wife is in US on J1 visa since March 2007. Can I claim her as a dependant on 1040NR even though she does not have Social Security Number from US. We are also using line of credit from Canada to pay for tution. Can we use that to our benefit for Tax purpose.

Can I claim her as dependent for both US and Canadian tax filings.

Thanks,

Taxed.

You do not report foreign income on 1040NR.

The other questions are too mechanical.
