Do I need a state return?

Post by dacrosby »

I wanted to know if I need to file a state tax return this year. I have been in Florida since 2001, and never needed a state tax return, as there is no state tax there. I started working for a NC company at the end of November, and earned income from them, and paid state income tax. I didn't move to NC until early January 2008 (signed a lease the first week). My family came from FL to NC in mid-January. During December, I stayed in NC during the week, and went to FL to my family and owned house on the weekends.

Do I need to file a NC tax return for 2007? I thought I did, but when I started it in Turbotax, Turbotax suggested I file a non-resident return first. Then I got to thinking, if I didn't have a permanent home in NC in 2007, do I need to do a state return? Also, this is the first year I will be married filing jointly, my wife had no NC income at all in 2007.

Thanks!

You need to file a non-resident NC return because you earned money there
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
