Canadian moves from US to Saudi Arabia

Post by canadausksa »

Non-resident Canadian lived for 8 years in the States. Moved to Saudi Arabia Nov. 2007. I understand that I have to file dual status. Do I treat the resident portion of my year normally (file joint, standard deductions, etc.)? Next question is that my house (of 3 years) did not sell until Feb 2008. How do I handle gains on this house - will I have to pay non-resident tax in a 2008 return? Thanks for your help.

When you leave US (assuming you don't have GC) you have the choice of fileing dual status or full year. If you file dual status, you can't file joint and you don't get standard deduction. If you file joint, you get both of above, but you must include your saudi income (and can exclude it using 2555).

Since you lived in your home 2 years and sold it within 3 years of leaving (and did not rent it out) you have no tax liability, nor any reporting requirement for 2008 to IRS.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
