This is our main tax information forum which deals with topics concerning Canadians living and working in the U.S., U.S. citizens contemplating working in Canada, and all aspects of Canadian and U.S. income tax and related adminstrative issues.
I am Canadian Citizen, working under TN status, in USA since 2003.
Since 2003, I have not filed any taxes in Canada. Even though currently, I am deemed resident for US tax purposes, do I still need to file taxes in Canada, even when I don't make any income there?
No. But your 2003 tax return should have had some departure date on it, and any deperture tax should have been paid.
After 20 years, I am severely cutting back on responses. Do not ask specifically for my help. There are a few others on this board that can answer most questions. All the best
Departure tax means that when a Canadian gives up his or her residence in Canada, all assets are deemed to have been sold at departure and any accrued capital gains tax is payable before leaving.
This is outlined in Emigrants and Income Tax Guide.
