Please validate my tax checklist for US/Can move + questions

I'll keep it simple. I moved to California from Quebec, Canada in October 2016 with my wife on a TN visa, my wife is on a TD. I sold off all my non RRSP assets before leaving to simplify my taxes, I only have money in bank accounts and RRSPs left in Canada. My wife is the same, plus a house. I just ...

On the IRS website it says I would be considered a non-resident alien for the rest of 2016. "If you are an alien (not a U.S. citizen), you are considered a nonresident alien unless you meet one of two tests. You are a resident alien of the United States for tax purposes if you meet either the g...

Thanks for the answer. I will go for the 1040 NR option. I did do more reading, and I saw the Canadian banks will issue me an NR4 for my interest earned. Do i claim that as U.S. source income for the first year? Or ignore? Also more importantly, would you have any idea about the W-8BEN i asked above...

Clarifications needed for non-resident alien for 2016

Thanks to the everyone, especially nelsona, for taking the time to answer questions. I'll try and keep it short. Situation: - Moved to California in October 2016 with my spouse on a TN Visa (TD for spouse) - I work full time in U.S., my spouse is not allowed working yet. - Closed all TFSA & Marg...

I definitely am getting the 2 mixed up. If it's not too much to ask if you could clarify that for me or point me to the right place for reading. From my understanding form 1040NR is for nonresident alien. But from what you are saying I do become a US resident on the day i move to the US? I actually ...

Hi nelsona, I was reading this thread as I am in a similar situation, but I am moving on Oct1st. Will not be a considered a U.S. resident because of my short time there this year as well? Where can I get more information on this? All my prep was based on becoming a US resident and making sure i'm no...

Timeline for closing Account before moving to USA

I am moving from Canada to USA on September 30th with plans on becoming a non resident in Canada right away to avoid double taxation issues. I have 3 accounts with Questrade: Margin, TFSA and RRSP. My plan was to close out my Margin + TFSA accounts before I leave Canada, and give Questrade my US add...

Moving to US. Difficulties becoming a non resident?

I'm moving to California at the end of the month. I am wondering if the steps I will follow will be enough to make me non-resident of Canada. I figured it is more straight forward since it's to the U.S. because from the CRA website it says the following: [i]"If you established ties in a country...

[quote="nelsona"]First, have you checked with Questrade to see if they are willing to deal with your RRSP in the state that you live? Most Cdn firms are not. After that, each mutual fund company then has rules on whether they allow US residents to buy from their family of funds. Other than...

As a U.S. resident, what should I hold in my RRSP?

I am moving the the U.S. and I am trying to clear up my finances before going. I have a self directed RRSP with Questrade, and I want to sort of put it on cruise control as much as possible before I leave. I am in my early 30s so I will not need this money anytime soon. I just want to let it grow. I...

[quote="nelsona"]1. Since (a) a Cdn broker cannot maintain your non-registered accounts while you live in US, and (c) you will be subject to deemed disposition when you leave, and (c) the mutual funds can't be transferred to a US broker, and (d) they will be subject to PFIC rules, you are ...

Another Canadian moving to California. Input is appreciated

First time posting here. I got referred to from another forum to be able to help me out. I have read a few thread about Canadians moving to the U.S. but I wanted to lay out my own personal situation to make sure I didn’t miss anything. My situation: I am moving from Canada (Quebec) to California a...
