You need a US immigration lawyer.

As I said in another post, fixing the toilet in your condo is one thing. Gutting a house and refurbishing it is another. This is work.

Obviously there is no visa for this work, otherwise 12,000,000 mexican day-labourers would have one.

I see you were thinking about immig issues too. You would be working in US. Also, you would have to maintain a Cdn home at all times. Even hiring mexicans is considered managing a business, which is not allowed as a tourist. So, at most, you would be visiting Dallas. you could hire a contractor to o...

Before addressing tax, you may have some immigration problems doing what you plan. You would, in essence, be working in the US, without a visa. Doing minor maintenance on a Florida condo is one thing. Becoming a contractor is another. Speak to a lawyer. At the very least you will have to maintain yo...

Now, if you were to marry, the CRA takes the position that the 3 months would certainly be a transitional period in which you BOTH clearly indicated your intent to leave canada and livein US legally. You would quite easily qualify for non-resident status in June (so long as you were taking the steps...

The tax problem, in your case, is that she has no legal right to live with you in US, since she cannot get a visa that permitts this. The best she can do is VISIT you, and must therefore mantain a residnce in Canada. Also, her tourist status will make it hard (not impossible) to establish US tax res...

1. It is unlikley that the expenses related to home-schooling would be eligible. Talk to the program co-ordinators.

2. many Cdn universities are accredited. Again, you would nbeed to talk to someone at the school.

3. Tax deferral is not maintained.

Obviously you can switch your 401(k) to an IRA, presumably after your current employer (most firms won't allow it while still working there).

If you've lived in the US for several years, you may be penalized for wanting to give up your GC anywys, so you might as well have all the rights of USC. Besides, your wife will always have to file in US, sometimes with you, so you aren't going to be ridding yourself of US tax regime. Get citizenshi...

1) you will report all your income to Canada, BC and US. A series of complicated foreign tax credits will result in you paying BC taxrates. 2)You will not pay any cap gains in Canada, so long as you sell your US home at approx the same time that you buy your Cdn one. Any US tax will depend on you ha...

This section relates to business income. If you are self-employed, you might be able to use it. I *think* this is dealing more with with "business tax" (ie. a tax on assets) IT-506:subsections 20(11) and (12) which provide for the deduction of certain foreign taxes in the computation of a ...
