Legal effect in Canada of U.S. oath of citizenship

I am U.S.-born, Canadian-raised and married to a Canadian. I am planning on eventually naturalizing my Canadian-born baby daughter under section 322 of the U.S. INA, as she is not eligible for automatic citizenship due to my own lack of time spent living in the U.S. If I do this while she is young e...

"No gross income" for personal exemption for NRA s

According to Publication 519, "If you are a resident of Mexico or Canada [...], you can also claim a personal exemption for your spouse if your spouse had no gross income for U.S. tax purposes and cannot be claimed as the dependent on another U.S. taxpayer's return." Is "no gross inco...

Or sorry -- correction to the first part of my question -- I would put the entire amount of the distribution on line 7a (including my own contributions), and then only the accumulated interest income on line 7b.

OK thanks. I had planned to repay the HBP amount into the still-existing RRSP account (from which a withdrawal was also made), so it will be, I presume, the same 8891 I would have filed anyway in succeeding years. So to be clear from your answer, on line 7a *and* 7b of form 8891, I would fill in the...

Emptying out an RRSP for the Home Buyers' Plan

Last year I held two RSP accounts -- a savings account and a GIC. When I bought a home in June, I made use of the Home Buyers' Plan and made a large withdrawal from the savings account, and simply emptied the GIC entirely (i.e. a premature withdrawal that combined it briefly with my normal savings a...

I appreciate all your help. I have read that the usual U.S. software (Turbotax, etc.) doesn't really work for non-residents without the requisite forms. Do you know of alternatives?

Yes, I see quoting is disabled now. :) So is editing of messages, apparently! So it sounds like using only 1116 is a perfectly acceptable way to go. So one follow-up question on that -- six years ago I was still a student, and as such my credits outweighed my very light liability (from summer earnin...

Thanks for your reply! Inevitably I have many follow-up questions, and I genuinely appreciate the effort you obviously put into this. It's remarkably generous of you. [quote="nelsona"]Let me first state that if you have children, you should not use 2555 but use several 1116s for all income...

Interaction of forms 2555 and 1116

First off, let me say that these forums are wonderful and I'm glad I've stumbled across them. I am a dual citizen -- I have never filed U.S. taxes before (lived in Canada all my life, never had any U.S. income), but have been meaning to file some back taxes to try to catch up. I have never made more...
