Re: best way to convert USD to CAD
Actually the interactive broker may be possible but with an account based in US instead, the only thing is I won't have an easy way to get the CAD from US to Canada after buying them.

Re: best way to convert USD to CAD
Thanks all but I want to avoid opening an investment brokerage account. US resident here so it is a hassle on IRS reporting next year. Question, suppose I find someone in Canada who wants to do exchange with me (I buy CAD with my USD, at a rate we both agree), and this all gets done through bank tra...

Re: best way to convert USD to CAD
Thanks I'm aware of Norbert's Gambit but that requires investment brokerage account inside Canada. As non resident I can't open one and it'll also add to IRS tax reporting hassle with the transaction. I already have both USD and CAD account with TDCT and can do the conversion online, but their rate ...

Re: best way to convert USD to CAD
I found out that the direct conversion rate at TD Waterhouse is ok, a little worse than transferwise but a lot better than TDCT. Is there any CRA/IRS tax consequence if I were to transfer USD from my Canadian bank to a family member (non US person) who can perform USD->CAD conversion at TD Waterhous...

best way to convert USD to CAD
Single US resident in NY here (Canadian on TN), non resident of Canada. Due to uncertainty of future, I realize a significant amount of my wealth (savings and investments) are denominated in USD. While it's pretty strong right now I'd like to start converting some to CAD while they're high before it...

Re: 2018 tax planning, end of US moving potentially back to Canada
Yes I'm aware of the 2018 changes with the deduction removed at Federal level on 1040. But it looks like at the state level (NY) it is possible to claim on Form IT-196, lines 21 through 24 per https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/file/itemized-deductions.htm So if I want to, what portion of the job search rel...

Re: 2018 tax planning, end of US moving potentially back to Canada
So I managed to secure a new TN for new employer and started work in US NY again in 12/2018. I also moved the Roth 401k to Roth IRA, from TDAmeritrade to Vanguard, the old employer contribution was automatically forefeited. I think nothing needs to be done financially now until my life plan changes ...

Re: 2018 tax planning, end of US moving potentially back to Canada
So I checked with Vanguard who has my employer's sponsored Roth 401k and they will allow me to keep the account either as US or non-US resident. While I did inquire about being a Canadian resident, they didn't mention anything against it. So I'm assuming as long as they allow non-US resident to hold...

Re: 2018 tax planning, end of US moving potentially back to Canada
Thanks Nelsona, can you please clarify what you mean? For TD Ameritrade, even if they lock the Roth IRA account to sell-only, I would still be able to transfer to another brokerage and/or withdraw the assets after I become US non-resident right? I don't think I need to do this immediately, at least ...

Re: 2018 tax planning, end of US moving potentially back to Canada
TD Ameritrade said the account will be switched to sell only once address changes to Canada. Thanks for bringing it up, either way it should not have too much impact as I plan to withdraw the Roth contribution at some point in the future. Another question I have is if I need to enroll in COBRA at al...

Re: 2018 tax planning, end of US moving potentially back to Canada
Thanks. There is a match for my Roth 401k, but I'm not vested so it'll be gone by the time I can move the money. I thought I read somewhere on this forum that TD Ameritrade allows non-residents, as they operate as TD Waterhouse in Canada, I will follow up with them to confirm. I plan on closing the ...

2018 tax planning, end of US moving potentially back to Canada
May 2016: Entered US on TN, file dual 1040NR + 1040 for IRS and regular tax until departure to CRA 2017: 1040 for US only. Non resident of Canada Oct 2018: TN layoff, left US immediately then back in a week as B2 to wrap up. Currently in US, leaving shortly and need to plan for 2018 and 2019 tax and...

Right yeah I thought so. I already filed for departure in 2016. I received a mixed of T5 and NR4 for the bank interests so I thought it's probably better to file a return to CRA even if no tax due. It should be all NR4 going forward from my banks. For US, yes I'm aware of all that FBAR and 8938/8621...

NR Canadian T1 Schedule A world income
I'm single under 30, currently working under TN in NYC since 2016 and filed NR for Canada 2016. For 2017, I have only $200 small amount of interest from bank and I've reported as such using ufile.ca there's no tax required and I plan on just printing that out and send to CRA. However, there is a for...

So I checked and turns out I can't contribute to traditional IRA for 2017 due to my income level. I only have 5500 available for Roth IRA for 2017 which I think I should fill regardless of future plans. Question, if I become non resident of US, can I still hold investment/IRA accounts with trade bro...
