Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
So, I did some research and estimated calculation based on 2019 numbers. Please let me know if I'm missing or assuming incorrectly. Assuming I have 200/250 work days in Canada excluding vacation, weekend...etc, I'll use 80% of the figures from W2 to calculate and apply a yearly average conversion ra...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
I came back because I had the mobility (only myself to consider since I'm single) and NYC Covid situation. There's a lot of unknown and worsening trend back in March. Anyways, the tax situation end result will probably be the negligible given the high tax rate of NYC, it's just a hassle to account a...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
My desire is to simplify tax reporting requirement for 2020, one way or another. Since I already exceed SPT on US side I'll have to file as full year US resident anyway. With my payroll already being withheld for various taxes, I don't know how easily it is to convince IRS as being non resident and ...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
I've always used 8833 for noting RRSP per treaty, in addition to FBAR and 8938. I thought that's the general form for declaring notes related to treaty articles, but thanks for mentioning I'll look more into it for 2020. Now that I have a clearer picture on how my whereabout can affect my taxes for ...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
Thank you for the reference, I found the explanation on https://serbinski.com/practical-application-fifth-protocol-canada-us-treaty#103 now. So, given it's likely I will exceed the treaty 183 day rule soon, I want to plan for how I spend the rest of 2020. I'll revisit this again next year after thin...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
I'm single and don't have family of my own. My living arrangement in Canada is living under my parents, I've removed ties to Canada as much as I can when moving to US and declared departure from Canada in 2016 and has been non-resident since. I wasn't aware the 183 days rule applies to a rolling 365...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
So I've got about 120 days of physical presence in Canada for 2020 but did not resume significant residency ties (working locally, health coverage, join clubs...etc) and still kept US apartment and job. While I will return to US, I don't think it will be a long visit (at most 2 more months total for...

Re: IRS/CRA gift reporting and tax
Thanks. Yeah that's what I figured too, the IRS annual exclusion is only 15000 but the lifetime limit is so high it's just another form to report. Looks like I can count the exclusion per person given and possibly spread it over 5 years if I want to avoid going into the lifetime bucket (but still re...

IRS/CRA gift reporting and tax
Single Canadian living in US under TN. US resident for IRS and non-resident for CRA, likely remaining that way for another couple of years. Family (parent, sister) are residing in ON, Canada and planning to move house, they have no US status. I want to contribute and put in say USD $100k to help the...

Re: TN -> Moved Jan'20 -> Now Possibly Staying in Canada; Register LLC?
You probably should check with the company to see if it's viable first changing you from W2 to 1099. They'll pay less payroll tax too but may consider additional legal hassle and hoops to jump thru and set up unless there already are examples in your company. Aside from not needing to pay US federal...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
Yeah, I'm only arrived 2 weeks ago so it's not significant yet. I intend to stay non resident of Canada unless job situation changes, but the remote work will likely continue for 3 months until May/June, who knows what happens. Does health coverage (OHIP) alone cause resume of residency? They've aba...

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
Agree, but I'm already in Canada and sheltered at home so it's moot now. Border is mostly closed and travel increases chances of getting sick for the next 2 months.
I'm mostly asking for the sake of planning what if, in the next tax season if there's something I can do now.

Re: TN extended remote work in Canada
No health coverage since I left in 2016, OHIP is gone after 6 months I believe. That was the personal delimma on returning to Canada as opposed to being covered in US, but I'm relatively young and need to take care of older parents in Canada just in case of prolonged lockdown so had to take that ris...

TN extended remote work in Canada
Single TN working in US, non resident of Canada. Due to recent situation, I flew back to Canada and starting working remotely for the US company while keeping residency in US (as in, apartment rental and belonging) while staying with family in Canada (parent/sibling). Not planning to travel anytime ...

Re: best way to convert USD to CAD
Interesting, thanks for the idea. I didn't know I could wire CAD from a US based brokerage to Canada.
I'll look into it. I already have TD Ameritrade so I'll check with them first if I can do it similarly.
