hi

It's a book called The American in Canada. Maybe you've heard of it? I think it's written by people who do similar work to what you do at your firm. So do you think it's a good idea for me as an American in Canada to start RESPs for my kids? How big would it have to grow before I'm at risk of the IR...

Question

I read a book recently about American/Canadian financial matters, and the authors said that RESP money cannot be used at an American college? Is that true? I am an American in Canada, and I don't know where my kids will go to college. We are the only family members in Canada. I'm confused about whet...

Tax structured open investment loans

I went to a financial seminar where this investment idea was shared. Apparently, it lowers the tax burden that my children would pay once my husband and I have both died. He ran some numbers to show that an RRSP would be taxed much more. Even if I were not an American, I don't know that I'd want to ...
There are many types of investments available for your RRSP. The tax deduction is available regardless of what you invest it, even a GIC or a money market fund, as long as you 'contribute'. You can then 'invest' later.
Thank you! Do you know anything about whether ...

Is now a good time to put more money into our RRSPs?

I know it is a tax advantage to invest in our RRSPs to the limit set by the CRA. I was thinking it's probably a good time to invest given that stock prices are low. But then someone cautioned me that you never know just how low they'll go, so perhaps now isn't a great time to invest?

Thoughts?

Thank you. So are you saying that the wisdom of starting a spousal RRSP does not depend on whether we retire in the US or Canada?

Spousal RRSP question

I don't remember if I've asked this before. We are Americans in Canada--applying for permanent residency. My husband has an RRSP--you had said it would be agood idea for me to get an open work permit and SIN so any extra RRSP contributions could go in a spousal RRSP. I don't remember what the advant...

Thank you! That does make it more clear. Just because I have to report something doesn't mean I'll be taxed on it.

So you really think it's worth it for me to get an SIN as soon as possible, so we can put any extra savings into a spousal RRSP rather than just add it to my husband's?
