Also, since I already have a Roth 401k account but only contribute minimal to meet employer match, is there any advantage in maximizing contribution for the rest of the year?

Thanks. I also have about 1k in HSA and 6k in employer sponsored Roth 401k. Should I try to use the HSA before I leave or does it not matter, and I assume I should also convert the Roth 401k to Roth IRA? Is it only to avoid the investment fees since both are after after tax? Lastly, the day I land i...

2018 US/CAN tax planning for TN termination

I'm currently on TN and single 30 year old, moved to NYC since 2016 and non resident of Canada. My TN job will end in 07/2018 (TN status valid until 05/2019) and I will have to find another job either before that or within the 60 days + 180 days for the grace period and B2 status before settling bac...

OK makes sense, so it's OK for TN status holders to "register" a business (sole proprietor) if it doesn't do anything, or as long as I'm not regularly operating it.

It is as you said another story to convince the banks that it's a legit business, but my concerns are with USCIS/IRS only.

OK so if I keep my "business" at a loss position for the sake of convincing the banks to issue me a credit card, IRS/USCIS wouldn't care right?

I can just sell a used book under cost each year to keep it running.

I may give this a try if there's a good card offer then.

OK thanks for explaining.

Say I get the credit card and do claim my amazon sale as the small business. If in 2017 I sold a book for $10 and had to pay postage of $2, will I need to keep record of these and file a business tax return?

Right, the act of selling used books is fine under TN status, however if I want to apply a business credit card as sole proprietor using my SSN with the above, wouldn't this get reported to IRS/USCIS and possibly get me into trouble? Since I am effectively claiming that I qualify for opening a small...

TN Status: Business credit card application

As a TN status person in US working, is it correct that I cannot apply for a business credit card in the US and claim amazon or e-bay or craigslist or garage sale of selling used books or old electronics as my small business? No profit/revenue is really being made as this is for the purpose of getti...

So I've made a year in my company and can now contribute to 401k with employer matching up to 5%. Question, I can do it pretax basis or after-tax Roth basis from my salary deduction. Is it still better to do it as Roth per the recommendation above given my single under 30 status and with an intentio...

State efile (NY) only with 1040

I prepare my tax in 2016 as dual status with 1040 and 1040NR part year. I filed the 1040 dual status already and sent to the IRS mailing address, using TaxAct. For the NY return, it's not letting me e-file using it's interface since I set myself to dual status for the 1040, there's no single state e...

Well yeah but the deadline is already missed so I'm submitting late, I'm not sure how 7004 would work now that I'm sending 3520A already. I can include 7004 regardless.

I am sending 3520 and attaching 3520A as statement, do I need to send a separate 3520A to the IRS address own its own?

1. Do I need 8833 to exclude the RRSP already reported in 8938/FBAR? I thought 8833 is just used for electing to file full year 1040 which I am not doing

2. 3520A is due March 15 no?

So I've finally sorted out all the forms and here's what I'm filing/reporting. Again, single moved May 2016 from Canada to US under TN Canada: Federal / ON reporting all income and stock sales until departure date T1243 listing the money market mutual funds I had (sold at cost a month later, no gain...

I don't think so, though it may depend on the institution.

TFSA brokerage itself is a trust, at least for the 2 brokerage I have. Both CIBC Investor's Edge and TD Waterhouse declare themselves as trust and thus 3520/3520A will be required.

I would choose #3 if I had the chance to re plan my US move. Just look at the number of forms below you may have to file from that URL if filing 1040. ETF will require 8621 Fbar 3938 already with 10k+ amount. If you have time left, convert to USD at a favorable rate or if there's no time left just f...
