You should be indicating QC, and the correct departure date. ufile should have the smarts to figure it out after that. There is a interview question on whether you have left or not. This will then take you to a table to fill out your schedule A. The tax refund was because it took your tax paid to QC...

There is no harm in having the 401(K).

Continuing to fund it however, is not advisable, since you will be fully taxed in canada when putting the money in, and fully taxed in US when taking it out, so there is little to be gained in continuing to fund your 401(k).

Calmly take the time to do your taxes on ufile.ca. never mind that today is the last day. there is no harm in filing a little late. Read the Emigrants guide. You won't be able to e-file anyways since you are non-resident.

Why does he need his american expert? Your Cdn tax return, properly filed, will have NO US income on it. You might as well have moved to Tibet. There is no need for an american expert to file your Cdn departure tax return, since you will not be reporting any US income, and thus will not need to clai...

I thought you said you already filed your return. If you did, the on-line services are pointless, since you are filing an amended return.

If you have not filed yet, tell your CPA to stop sitting on his brains and get busy.

Look at the "Emigrants" guide. Do not submit form NR73 unless the government asks for it, regardless of what your jerk-off acct says. Why would you have paid an accountant lots of money to do what he treated like an "ordinary" return, which is all the service he did for you. you ...

The problem is you ahve already listened to this guy, and he filed incorrectly. Now, in order to coirrect this, you will have to correct it with the date, and fulfill all the other requirements of departure return, which includes a couple of forms. he should have done this in the first place, but wa...

first off, are you sure you should be filing a non-resident return? If you left canada in 2006, you file a DEPARTURE return, which is a normal return but with a departure date (and QC return would also be filed, with same departure date). If you left Canada in 2005 or earlier, you only file non-resi...

Note what BDO says: http://www.bdo.ca/library/publications/tax/taxbulletins/032007b.cfm Since an RESP is a foreign trust, U.S. persons who invest in them are subject to the U.S. reporting requirements for foreign trusts. The ability to obtain the tax treatment as described above can be jeopardized i...

The way to correct this is by sending a letter to CRA (International) with a copy of the T5 and a checque for the proper withholding. You should contact the payor and reitertae that you are a US resident (sometimes the mere fact of giving them a US permanent adress just 'click' in them that you are ...

Sounds false to me. RRSPs set up with a bank or brokrage are foreign trusts, so why would an RESP not be. 8891 replaces 3520 for RRSPs only.

Sounds like someone is lazy to give you paperwork.
