Canadian in US on dependent visa working telephone to Canada
Here's a scenario on which I'd value input. A Canadian man resides/works in the U.S. on a TN1 or H1B or whatever. Wife has the appropriate dependent visa and cannot work in U.S. Wife is a consultant who sits in a home office in the U.S. and consults by telephone to Canadian clients in Canada. Canadi...

T1161
Yes, but because I sold most of my stocks, my property was cash when I moved it into the U.S. and I had less that $25,000 of stocks (the losers). Even if I then bought millions of dollars of stocks a day after I arrived in US, no T1161 for me, correct?

Are you a Canadian citizen? Then just move back to Canada and change your relationship from employee to consultant. The company pays you and you pay all your taxes in Canada and none in the US. Of course, if you're a salesperson or something like that and plan to travel frequently to the U.S., US im...

I can handle anything
I suppose I am being a big baby. Actually I despise all software: I just enjoy the dialogue on this forum! Yes, I understand I'll have to print out and mail the return anyway, but I don't see why I'd want to if the software doesn't do the arithmetic for me. What I was hoping for was software that ca...

Ufile and Quicken
I just did Ufile and it does not appear possible to enter deemed disposition of property in the year of departure. This requires T1234 and the Ufile help index does not list that form as one supported by the software. Whether or not it used my date of departure to accurately calculate provincial tax...

Departure date in 2005?
I am using Quicktaxweb (which may be less sophisticated than Quicktax) and there is NOWHERE to put a departure date. In fact, if you put in "BC" as province of residence, it freezes when you get to the mailing address because it only accepts a Canadian mailing address and freaks out at a Z...

Please don't keep me guessing: which software did you use and which did you prefer?

Quicktaxweb
I'm using Quicktaxweb and I'm losing confidence it's going to work. I can't see anywhere to put a departure date, nor do I see form T1243 (Deemed Disposition of Property by An Emigrant of Canada). Also, one of the first questions is "Select the province or territory you were a resident of on De...

TN1 H1B
Your question requires a daylong tutorial. However, I can tell you that switching from TN1 to H1B is irrelevent for tax purposes.

TurboTax
TN Holder, is 2005 the year in which you moved to the US, or were you there the full year? If the former, I'm glad to hear Turbo Tax worked for you. Did you elect to file as a U.S resident for the whole year or file a 1040NR with the date of arrival?

Digital Moose Lounge Expat Survival Day Mar 4 Santa Clara CA
This Digital Moose Lounge Canadian networking group holds this event every year. It covers both tax and immigration issues. Anyone have any experience with the tax section of the event? Is it worthwhile? The tax accountants presenting are from Keats Connelly ("The Border Guide"). (Not as g...

Married filing jointly and a request for MaggieA
2005 was my departure year from Canada to U.S. (May 1). My wife and I sold our Canadian equities in April 2005 in order to realize the capital gain. This is because we plan to remain in the U.S. indefinitely and understood (from "The Border Guide" book) that the tax treaty does not address...
