Since you qualified as a resident the entire year, you do not need the treaty to do this (i would even say that 8833 was overkill in any event).

The treaty was really to exclude YOUR income before you became resident.

Unless the charity is your alma mater, you may only deduct Cdn charitable contributions to the extent that you report (and do not exclude) double that amount in Cdn income.

For your school, or your kids' school, there is no limit.

You DO NOT have to maintain any Cdn ties to have a TN, though (unlike toursit visa). All you need to do is ensure anyone that asks that you will leave US when your status expires. This covers you even if it is renerwed several times. Resist the temptation to 'temporarily' import your car. Import it ...

The custom form is not so important for you; your movers however need a copy of your TN and all the paperwork when THEY cross the border. Your TM allows you to move to the US. Since you already have it, simply cross the border, staing that you are TN (and TD). Your CAR is another issue to consider, ...

You may continue to use 2555 to exclude her Cdn wages, so long as she continues to meet the requirements for FEIE, which is not being in US for certain ammount of days, or maintaining her tax home in CAnada. Of course, her staying in Canada puts into question your own tax residence, but I'll leave t...

No, it is not deductible. besides, since it is now 2007, it is impossible for you to overcontribute for 2006.

If you are saying that you contributed to an RRSP in 2006, then you must be sure that it was less than $2000, or you will be penalized.

1. You would only have RRSP contribution room if you had reported wages on your 2005 return, so, no. You may contribute now for 2007 if you wish, claiming the deduction in spring 2008. 2. The foreign tax credit for your T1 is based on the final fed and state tax that you pay, not what was withheld d...

Why would writing a letter not be worth $15? You have to mail your return in anyc ase. It will not open any questions, as this is the cortrect procedure to follow. Besides, to correctly claim foreign tax credits on his 1040, he can only claim the 10% he legally owes. Carson, what would be your thres...

If you were living in Canada the answer would be clear-cut: you would pay tax on income that that money earned. There are some exclusions to this. Once you leave Canada, the answer is not so clear-cut, in my opinion, as there is no way for CRA to determine the source of such funds. Add to the mix th...

This is incorrect. There is a special category for those witha US Masters , but
it is staill a restricted quota, which is curently full. A Cdn masters gets you nothing.

Your only hope is to file april 1 or 2 under the genaral cap.

If you were working in the US (non-commuting) you would make application for UI thru the state agency, but with HRDC involvement (since you would need to prove that you are looking for work in canada). If you are a commuter (ie. working i na border state), you would apply thru the state agency direc...
