US Citizen, working in Canada, claiming dependent
Hi, I'm a US citizen working in Canada. My brother who is a US citizen goes to school in the US and I paid his rent in 2007 (around USD 11,000). Can I claim him as a dependent and if so, what kind of forms would I be required to fill. Also, what kind of supporting documentation would be required? Th...

SKilled worker program and length of work permit
Hi, Does the timing of application matter? Should I apply in March after my work permit has been renewed for 1 or 3 years more? Or should I apply now when this current permit expires in March '08? Basically does it matter how much time you have left on your current work permit when applying for skil...

Hey nelsona, I've been thinking about this for the past 2 days - the negative thing i see out of me filing as an ON resident in 2006 would be that the CRA could re-assess me for 2005 and i'll owe them $1200. They'd also be curious regarding why i keep changing my filing status. Should i really rock ...
I think the big problem you would have is if Ontario would ever find out that you are skipping out on their share of the taxes. I assume you have OHIP (which is further proof of living in Ontario).
But that's why i am paying the federal surtax. Canada is not losing out on me by me ge...

I think for purpose of his tax liability structuring, he'd want to be a contractor vs. an employee. There's so many IT contractors where I work - nobody wants to be a highly paid employee in Canada. As you pointed out the question is more about ensuring that the equivalent US to CAD amount is paid. ...

I think section XXV.3 that you quoted - well, the CRA phone guys wouldn't readily know of that. And that'd override what I quoted above from the Personal Credits bulletin: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tp/it513r/it513r-e.html#P139_17712 But I'm a little concerned about your concern about my deemed ...
