I should add that I severed ties to Canada when I moved to the US with the intention to be a non-resident of Canada. Another question is, am I able to file the 1040NR and simultaneously be a non-resident of Canada?

I am a Canadian citizen, stopped receiving Canadian income end of June 2017, moved to the US with a TN visa and started receiving US income mid-July 2017. I don't meet the substantive presence test in 2017 but I will in 2018.
