Which boxes on W2 and/or 1040 should be used as tax credit when filing taxes for Canada. (TN1 working in US)

Since yesterday I did not know we have to file Federal and State seperatly in US.
My question:
As I said before, I have to apply ITIN with W7 for my wife, I asked IRS and also instructed by Nelson about it so I know what should I do.How about State tax?, do I have to send a W7 to State ...

So what do you suggest?
I've red the postings on this site, but still I am not sure how to do the taxes on the first year and realy don't want to pay $1000 to accountant.
On reason is, when I was in Canada, I undrestoot what accountants are doing is axactly what the tax software ...
