Claiming Interest Expense, do I need to pay dividends?

I own shares in my company. I took out a loan to purchase the shares of the company.
In order to claim the interest expense from the loan on my personal taxes, do I need to pay myself out dividends from the company? Or can I claim interest expense against the salary I pay myself through the company?
