Re: IRA management for Canadian residents
I now see that Charles Schwab is buying TD Ameritrade in 2020 assuming they're not stopped by regulators. What on earth happens if all of a sudden they say for me to get my larger IRA (non resident Canadian) out of their bank? I can't just throw it into another one if as a non-resident I can't open ...

Re: IRA management for Canadian residents
I've recently gone through this and for me, I made sure to only have an IRA which is with TD Ameritrade in the US. They were easy to deal with on this issue as long as I only have an IRA account and they're quite okay for me to trade within it, etc. as a Canadian in Canada. As Nelson suggests, I cal...

Re: TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
I returned to Canada on Dec/29/2018 (CDN citizen returning from long time as US TN). 1. I'm now filling in the 1040 for 2018 but wondering in the address section do I keep it as my US address or change to my new Canadian address? Does this make it easier/better? or just complicate matters. 2. I will...

Re: TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
Thanks Nelson. I have an IRA with TD Ameritrade. In other threads I see you saying that I must get a letter from them saying they will still hold the account in the US as a Canadian non-resident. I have indeed got that letter from them now so I wanted to check: 1. Is that all I have to do as far as ...

Re: TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
Great info, thanks again. Just to be clear though, for the Canadian side: a. for that last few weeks I will be in Canada for 2018, I would then file a 2018 Canadian tax return in 2019? b. for the rental property, I would also file a 2018 Canadian tax return as a non-resident, up to when I become a C...

Re: TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
No capital gains or depreciation at time of coming back to Canada.
That's great Nelson, thanks.

Re: TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
One other note - I bought this property in Canada before moving to the US and it has always been a rental property. Thx.

Re: TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
Thank you Nelson. Sounds like #3 may be a problem for me. My CDN accountant has indeed been depreciating the property for the last number of years. So if the 'change of use' doesn't change (ie: will still be a rental and not my primary residence when I move back to Canada), do I have to pay back all...

Re: TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
Thank you Nelson. Really appreciated. I have a couple of other concerns here as well if you don't mind. 1. I have a rental property in Canada that I had before moving to the States on TNs. I have been filing NR4/NR6 in past years. I assume that if I return near the end of December 2018, then I do no...

TN leaving US back to Canada - filing
I've been working in the US for a number of years on TN visas. I am returning back to Canada 12/2018, but not exactly sure of the differences between the dates I could choose to return. 1. If I return on: Dec/15/2018, does this mean I will file a 2018 1040 up to 12/15/18? 2. If so, do I file the 104...

Re: TD Waterhouse - checking citiizen instead of resident alien
Thank you Nelson for responding. The TD account does have an IRA in it containing most of the account's value. It has been created over the years by putting money in and rolling over other IRAs into it. If I look at an old form I had for rolling an IRA in this one it does not specify citizenship, on...

TD Waterhouse - checking citiizen instead of resident alien
I'm a Canadian citizen but US resident on a TN and have been on many TNs over the years. I realize this sounds dumb but I created a TD Waterhouse account probably 12+ years ago which was then converted by TD to a TD Ameritrade account probably 10+ years ago. I can't remember if they even offered a c...

TN visa and leaving US back to Canada
Hi there. I have worked in the US for more than 10 years on TN visas. I thought that when I returned to Canada to become a Canadian resident / US non-resident that I was considered a 'long term permanent resident' and would have to file form: I-407 (abandonment of lawful permanent resident status - ...
