Re: W-8BEN Rev 2021 - Question 6a/6b
My proofreading is failing me. Basically everywhere I wrote SSN I meant SIN. "Should SIN be entered for 6a".

Re: W-8BEN Rev 2021 - Question 6a/6b
Correction, I wrote: "Some institutions such as RBC recommend putting your SSN in as a FTIN". What I mean to say was SIN not SSN.

W-8BEN Rev 2021 - Question 6a/6b
I'm a Canadian resident/citizen and a US nonresident alien. I don't receive any income from the US, but I maintain a US account with US company RSUs I received while working there many years ago. I'm filling out a new W-8BEN, and realized they've updated the form since I last did it. Institution is ...

Reporting requirements on shares owned when becoming a resident of Canada
I became a tax resident of Canada in 2018 and owned US private corporate shares at the time. I sold some of these shares in 2019 and now need to report capital gains. In the 2019 Newcomers to Canada guide, it clearly states that: "If you owned certain properties (other than taxable Canadian pro...

Re: Roth 401k (Early) Distribution Filing Requirements
Addendum to the first part of my last post: I just did a bit more digging and it seems the 1042-S is in relation to the distribution NOT the contribution. It seems the 1042-S lists the gross distribution as 385 (the contributed amount), however the net is 365 which is 385 minus a loss (they call it ...

Re: Roth 401k (Early) Distribution Filing Requirements
"You can see the confusion, yes?" Yes, apologies. So are you still of the opinion that it is a not a Canadian contribution? Additionally, I just received a 1042-S from Fidelity that seems to claim an income of 385.00 (the contribution amount). This seems to suggest the IRS/Fidelity are tre...

Re: Dual Status Return for Returning Canadian
Alright, so more succinctly, for the 1040 statement I am basically filling out only the income portions and associated attachments, then forwarding the results on to the 1040NR statement where I additionally compute non-resident income, deductions, credits etc and finally tax owing/owed. Seems to ma...

Dual Status Return for Returning Canadian
Trying to wrap my head around the dual-status return and feel that I am getting closer. I returned to Canada in April 2018, was US resident Jan-March and Canadian resident April-Dec. I am choosing to file dual-status over 1040 full year because I opened a TFSA upon my return and do not want to have ...

Re: Roth 401k (Early) Distribution Filing Requirements
To clarify, the contribution arrived in the account after I physically entered Canada, however, the contribution arose from a paycheck dated before I entered Canada. I asked this question in another post and you explicitly told me that this was not a Canadian contribution. Post is here: https://foru...

Roth 401k (Early) Distribution Filing Requirements
Moved back to Canada from US in 2018. Right before I moved I rolled over my Roth 401k into my Roth IRA. Balance of Roth 401k was 0 when I entered Canada. A few weeks after establishing residence I received the final contribution to my Roth 401k from my last paystub in the US. The contribution was 38...

Re: Closing/Withdrawing Traditional IRA in Canada
Digging this post back up since I am currently filing... I closed the account and received the 0.14 cent distribution. The thing that confuses me is that no tax was withheld. I don't think it really matters, but shouldn't tax have been withheld? As I understand the default is 10% and I had not elect...

Re: W-8BEN for Roth 401k
Alright that answers questions (1) and (4). Any answer for (2) and (3)? I'll rephrase for simplicity: On line 9 of W-8BEN it asks for country of residence, I'll put Canada. On line 10 it asks for special rates and conditions. Do I fill this out? If yes, do I put "Article XVIII Paragraph 2(a)&qu...

W-8BEN for Roth 401k
Having trouble finding conclusive information on this... I recently left the US and became a resident of Canada. I have a Roth IRA and Roth 401k with Fidelity. Fidelity sent me a letter last week stating that for the Roth 401k I need to send them a W-8BEN. I'll enumerate my questions to simplify: 1)...
