Do I need to file taxes in Canada?

Context: I declared Canadian non-residency in last year's tax filing for my family and myself. The bank where I have my Canadian accounts also has my US address on file Q: My Canadian bank account generated a paltry interest in 2016 of USD160. Do I need to file taxes in Canada in lieu of that amount...

ND - I went to the Ste. Catherines, ON passport office. They said they will need the passport for ten days. I told them I need to head back to the US in 3 days. They agreed to do so and did infact return the passport with the certified copies within 3 days. Its more inline with your latter observati...

thanks for the inputs everyone. I am headed to Canada next week for a couple of days and plan to visit the passport office. I'm hoping that because I will show up at the ppt office in person, I will not have to leave my passport with them. The application form that nelson pointed out earlier mention...

Thanks nelsona. That's correct...she has no income. Just a joint bank account with me (I myself moved last year) with value of less than $10K. There was minimal interest on it (its a checking account) which I added to my tax returns with CRA

Form NR73 and Cad Tax returns?

Hi, My mother (a Canadian citizen) became a US permanent resident (green card) last year. Her income last year in both Canada and US was $0. She called up CRA to inform them that she is not a resident of Canada anymore. CRA asked her to send form NR73. I am a Cad citizen too and am on H1 status in t...

Thank you Nelsona. Your Q is valid... I was told that ITIN can only be obtained at time of tax filing (which was April-2016 for the first time for me). I should have gotten a certification from Passport Canada earlier (my bad). I have already filed for extension. Thankfully, IRS owes me a few Ks so ...

Just an fyi in case someone else finds themselves in this situation...I called CRA asking for a status on T2062 that I had submitted. Turns out they are taking a whopping 27 weeks to process it! Clearly they are in no rush :)

hi there...I have all the forms and documentation ready and am all set to send to CRA. I have just one pending confusion and will appreciate any clarity: T2062 - Column-4 asks for exemptions. Since I sold the house within the first year of departure itself, I entered the entire gain amount as exempt...

Thanks Nelsona...its all clear now. I have one more question...doesn't apply to me but to a friend of mine. He moved to the US earlier this year, however, his family still lives in Canada. Say (for argument sake), they keep this arrangement for another 2 years, at the time of disposition, will they ...

Hi Nelsona...thankfully he withheld in an account (not yet fwd'd to CRA). I appreciate all the advice. I am working on the worksheets as we speak and will likely have a couple of follow-on questions. Will post shortly... Btw, I reached out to my tax accountant in Canada and his response was: "T...

Thank you Nelsona. The real estate lawyer only asked me since when did I start living in the US and I told him Jan-2015. At that he said that 25% of the selling price will be withheld until I provide them with a tax certificate. I closed the house on Nov-30th and will be filing the form asap. Thank ...
