1042S reporting on Schedule NEC
Hello, Canadian resident/citizen filing 1040-NR (have US income other than source of this question). I have a 1042-S from a Canadian/International brokerage, in which I hold some US ETFs I transferred when I moved from US to Canada. The 1042-S is reporting some dividends under income code 06 ("...

Re: Timing of opening brokerage accounts when moving US -> Can
I have a followup question hopefully someone can help with. My understanding is that since I'm not a US citizen or permanent resident, no US exit tax applies, and the value/cost basis of my securities is whatever value they are on the day I moved. However, the day the actual transfer occurs will not...

Timing of opening brokerage accounts when moving US -> Can
I'm a Canadian citizen who has been living in the US for 7 years, moving back to Canada next month. My wife and I have significant holding in a TD Ameritrade taxable account, and would like to move them with an in-kind transfer to TD Direct Investing or Interactive Brokers. However, I'm supposed to ...

Investing as Canadians While in the US
My wife and I are both TN visa holders working in the US for nearly 2 years now. We do not know when we will be leaving but we intend to return to Canada. My wife maxes out her company 401k, but now we are also looking to make additional long term investments. My plan is to open an account with TD A...

30% tax for Canadian non-resident
I'm reading publication 519 for the first time and seeing a 30% tax associated with non-US source income for non-residents. I'm filing a 1040NR. Does this mean I have to report any Canada-source income and pay 30% tax on it?

Reporting Canadian-held accounts and other gotchas
My wife worked in Canada January-June of 2014. We moved to the US on TN/TD status and I worked in the US from September 2014 through the end of the year. I was feeling pretty confident and comfortable with filing my Canadian return as a factual resident of Canada and reporting my foreign income, as ...

Claim early 2014 Canadian income on US 1040NR?
I worked in Canada from January to April 2014 and then in the US from Sept to the end of the year. I am maintaining residency in Ontario for the 2014 tax year. I know I have to claim my US income in Canada and can get a foreign tax credit, but do I have to include my Canadian income on my US return,...
