Thanks so much for your advice Nelsona. I am confident that my departure filing for 2006 will be accepted. My worry was cancelling my health card with a departure date of 2006 having renewed the card and using it after 2006. I contacted ServiceOntario and this is what they said. [b]You would need to...

Back dating non residency

I don't agree with my accountant and need some advice on the date to apply for non residency. I left Canada in 2006. At the time I had no home in Canada, husband or dependents. I didn't know whether the move was permanent so I didn`t sever any ties with Canada. I kept my Ontario health card, DL, cre...

Thank you for your advice. Although I am more confused than ever. I have spoken with three accountants and they all say the same thing. Proving residency should not be a problem because of the tax treaty but I should still reduce my ties to Canada as much as possible to claim non tax residency in Ca...

Sorry. I forgot to say. I am now living in Spain. There is a tax treaty and the accountant I have contacted to help me with this still wants me to break secondary ties. At the moment I have two bank accounts, a credit card, driver's licence, RRSP and passport. I know I should have cancelled my healt...

Proof of severing ties with Canada

I am in the process of severing my ties with Canada and need to know the correct way to go about it. I left Canada in 2006 but only decided to file for non residency now. I have been told that I should always have proof by sending letters to cancel my Ontario Health Card, bank accounts, credit cards...

secondary ties I can keep

I want to become non resident but keep some secondary ties to canada including my rrsp, one bank account, drivers licence and passport. I have been told that it's too many ties to keep and I should get rid of all bank accounts but keep the rest on my list. Any advice on what to keep?

Many thanks.
