US Citizens back in US - CRA Installment Refund

My husband and I moved from Canada back to the US late in 2016, and will not be returning to Canada as residents. We are both Americans. My husband received a lump-sum payout from his Canadian employer on January 1, 2017, so we filed our Canadian (and US) tax returns including that amount for 2017. ...

Thanks, we were hoping that would be the case! We do intend to have all ties severed by then.

We're also using Serbinski's tax services this year, and next year too, to make sure we are covered.

USC taking early retirement, returning to US in 2016

My husband and I are USCs/Canadian PRs, and have lived in Canada for 9 years. We own a home here, have the usual bank accounts, and an RPP at my husband's job. No RRFPs or TFSAs. I am not employed. We have maintained a checking account in the US, and have tax-deferred retirement plans and Roth IRAs ...

You're right, no US income to speak of -- some bank interest, a mutual fund we raided 20 ago and didn't dispose of the rest. But all reported, when there was something to report, that is! Thanks for confirming that the forms are not needed -- I was relying on your posts for my education! And will co...

Thank-you, nelsona, for confirming what we had hoped -- nothing surprising. We have been preparing our taxes in recent years, after using an overpriced tax preparation service for our first few years here in Canada. We have kept our lives fairly simple, no RRSPs etc, just bank accts and RPP (dbp) th...

USC working in Canada, upcoming sabbatical in California

My husband and I are US citizens, and have lived in Ontario since 2007 when he got a job here. We are permanent residents. We have filed our US taxes every year. I am not nor have I been employed in Canada. We own a home here, and no property in the US or elsewhere. We meet the bona fide resident an...
