That's funny. They're the ones I worried would kick us out of the new combined firm.
Thank you for the tip.

Cross border portfolio manager?
Hi. I'm looking for a portfolio manager for cross-border investing and am wondering if your firm can recommend someone with whom your clients work? I now live permanently back in Canada and manage a self-directed IRA through TD Ameritrade, but since they've been bought by Charles Schwab, I'm concern...

Re: Estate and Inheritance Taxes on a Canadian's US IRA
Thanks for responding. The last two sentences seem to be contradictory. If there is no inheritance tax, then why would the IRA beneficiaries be taxed, whether over 5 or 30 years.
Thanks

Estate and Inheritance Taxes on a Canadian's US IRA
Hi. I'm a former US person (turned in my green card) who has a traditional IRA (about $200K) left in the US that I would like to leave to US friends when I die. As far as I know, the IRA amount must be reported on my final Canadian return when I die and will be taxed. Will the IRS also tax these sam...

Do I need to file 3520A
Hi. I purchased investments in Canada, where I live, in 2016 but have only learned that I'm still a US person. Do I need to file 3520A for my investments (3 mutual funds, one of which is under a TFSA)? My investment manager (Scotiabank) says they don't file 3520A.
Thanks

Impact of fom I-407 on Social Security benefits?
Hi. I'm a former long-term resident of the US and returned to Canada in 2016. I'm hoping to file immigration form I-407 to simplify my taxes and investments. Can anyone tell me if filing I-407 will cause me to lose my ongoing Social Security disability pension? It's 80% of my income, so I need to be...

Tax reporting requirements for long-term green card holder
Hi. I'm a Canadian citizen who lived in the U.S. for 20 years, most of it on a green card, and moved back to Canada in late January, 2016 when my green card expired. For health reasons, I have no plans to go back, not even for visits. Can I file as a non-resident alien with the IRS for February, 201...

How to fill in form 8938, part VI, items 8a, b, and c?
I'm trying to fill in part VI of form 8938 for my RRSPs and have been scouring the web for simple answers to items 8a, b, and c in part VI. The IRS guides have been no help. 8a. Name of issuer or counterparty: Scotiabank (easy enough) Then it asks me to check if the information is for an issuer or a...

driver's license for TN visa holder
I moved to the U.S. on a TN visa 20 years ago and was able to get a NY driver's license. I subsequently moved to NJ two years later and had to take a written test for the NJ license, but had no other issues at the time. The rules have changed since, partly because of 9/11. I just renewed my license,...

Rule changes for forms 8891, 8938, and 8833?
I've read that form 8891 is no longer required. For TY 2014, do I now need to report the RRSP amounts on 8938 instead? Also, do I still need to take a treaty position to defer taxation on my RRSPs on form 8833?
I am, of course, reporting the accounts on FBAR as well.
Thank you.
Dirk

taxation of CPP benefits for a U.S. resident
Hi. I'm currently receiving disability benefits from both Canada and the U.S. I'm a Canadian citizen and a U.S. permanent resident, living in the U.S. I've read repeatedly that my Canadian CPP benefits should be entered on lines 20a/b on form 1040, but my accountant claims it should be reported as o...
