Do I need to file in Canada?

Hi I am a canadian citizen, and a PR of the US since Feb 2014. I have filed 2 canadian returns since moving to the US (2013 and 2014 tax years). For 2015, I have no Canadian income, but I do have one small bank account still open (around $5000). Do I need to file in Canada for 2015? Thanks, Mark

What to do with 5K in Canada?

Hi I am a permanent resident of the US now, and a Canadian citizen. I immigrated about 2 years ago on a K1 visa. I have about 5K sitting in a Canadian bank account right now, but because of the exchange rate I don't really want to convert it into USD. Are there any accounts or plans I can put it int...

Filed jointly vs separately for USA taxes?

Here's a question for you: My wife and I are both living in the USA, but are both Canadian, and she is an American citizen, and I am a permanent resident. This results in some very complicated tax situations. FYI my income was $14K CDN(EI income), and $10K USD, and my wifes was $36K. I was just abou...

As for how I filed in Canada for 2013, what do you mean? I filed my exit return as married.

I made 14000 CDN (from EI) and roughly $10,000 US (from my job which i started in September 2014).

So far no luck figuring it out, but I am sure I can.

Two more questions - I have been reading about filing section 217. Does this apply to me, and would it be beneficial? It seems very complicated. Also do I need to file a Canadian return for 2014?

Thanks,
Mark

Can you explain where I should actually enter the EI as foreign income? On a 1099-G, using my address, or under the foreign earned income section? I am using turbotax.

Thanks so much, I hope you are going crazy with tax season!

Thanks nelsona!

Would i apply it as foreign earned income, and then include the taxes as a foreign tax credit using form 1116?

Thanks,
Mark

Canadian T4E on US taxes

Hello Thanks for all your help last year! I moved to the USA on a K1 visa in October 2013, was married Nov 2 2013, and received EI income from Canada while looking for work (February 2014 - August 2014). I received a T4E from the CRA, and I am wondering if I have to include this on my US taxes, or i...

hmm do these expire? Could I call the CRA and see if they have anything on file for her?

Is there any way this could harm us or make us pay more in back taxes? She hasn't lived in Canada since 2003.

You guys are great!

While I was in Canada I was on an F1 student visa, and a resident of Canada. I am not sure if she filed in Canada, I am guessing if she did she would have been claimed as a dependent of her father. He had moved to the US when she started college though as well, so he probably only filed an exit retu...

Any way for wife to get tax credits for US college?

Hi guys I am just curious about this. My wife and I are both Canadian citizens, and we went to the same college in the US. I graduated in 2006, she in 2007. I returned to Canada after 4 years of school, and when I started working, I got tax credits for basically ALL of the tuition I paid. My wife st...

I think I figured it out, it was a turbotax error somehow.

Does any of this affect the State portion of our return We live in Indiana.
