Not because we understood the cap gain rules well enough before, but it has ended up working perfectly with selling losers before and winners after.
And loving the unexpected opportunity for "Canadian Roth" tax free savings because of this scenario!
Really appreciate your helpful advice!!

Thanks for the quick reponse. We've confirmed we do not have to pay US exit tax. Intent is to file as dual status (we plan to give up our greencards). We are moving our non-registered investments from a US-based account to Cdn-based account. If there's no IRS cap gain tax liability because we are no...

US cap gains tax after returning to Canada
Recently returned to Canada after working in the US on a greencard for almost 5 years. We are Canadian citizens. It's clear to us that book value is reset using value on first date of Cdn residency for calculating cap gains owing to CRA on our non-registered investment account. Need to confirm if ca...

Form 7004 - extension 3520-A
I have my 3520-A/3520 completed for 2014 tax year (final year - closed acct in 2014), but am awaiting a summary of transactions and tax slips from Cdn institution holding TFSA that I will use to cross-check the work I've done. With the Mar 15th date looming, I want to have the 7004 extension form co...

I have a couple of questions: Like many was unaware of the TFSA reporting issues when I moved to US at end of 2012. Once I realized how much work was involved, I closed the account in 2014. Last year, this forum was a huge help in filling out my 'initial' returns 3520/3520A for 2013 tax year. Now, a...

Thank-you nelsona! Definitely a headache...and yes will definitely be closing this account. Obviously, will have to file one more year now...but maybe you can answer another question about that. I have one investment that was purchased at end of March 2013...I'm assuming it would make sense to wait ...

3520a - TFSA unrealized gains/losses question
First, thank you to all those posting here re: taxation and the complexities of various form completion. I've found it to be incredibly helpful in the completion of some of the forms. Background: Cdn citizen, now living in USA and completing initial returns (3520 and 3520a) for TFSA (that in hindsig...
