Just read this on irs.gov: Not foreign earned income: Foreign earned income does not include the following amounts: -Pay received as a military or civilian employee of the U.S. Government or any of its agencies -Pay for services conducted in international waters (not a foreign country) -Pay in speci...

Foreign earned income exclusion

Moved to US in Jan. 2014 for work (TN with H1B now).
After move, I received income from previous employer (around mid-Jan. 2014) for work done in 2013.
How do I avoid the double taxation of this income?

On Line 12 (Form 2555EZ), did you indicate the date you moved to the US in 2014 and restate your income earned (i.e., W-2 info)?

I can't use 2555EZ since i'm claiming moving expenses, I think.

Yeah, that one makes sense. I think 13a is the one stumping me..

QC2OH: Sorry, I have another question. What did you say for Form 2555 Line 13a and b? And why?

Thanks in advance.

nelsona: Previously when I did reply YES to that, the subsequent responses forced me to file a 1040NR. I probably enterred something wrong at the time because it worked this time.

QC2OH: Thanks again. Your post was tremendously helpful.

Great post. I've been referring to this. Question though: How did you prepare your forms? I'm using TurboTax and it doesn't allow me to file Form 2555 after I respond "NO" to this question: "Did you live and work outside the US at any time in 2014?" Like you, I earned income from...

RRSP January Withdrawal Before Becoming Canadian NR

I have $11k in a RRSP Savings. No other savings or investment accounts, just a checking account. I resigned from my Canadian job in December 2013. I will be starting work in the US mid-January 2014. Therefore, I should have no Canadian income in 2014. If I withdraw the $11k from the RRSP while still...

Thanks nelsona. Given my situation, what would you advise that I do with my RRSP? I want to keep the RRSP because it's meant to be withdrawn when I retire (and if that's the case I want to move it from a savings to a mutual fund where it might have the potential to "grow" a bit until I ret...

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to this. Do you have a recommendation for the best way to transfer over my CAD funds to a US bank account? Certified cheque, wire transfer, etc? Also, my RRSP funds were in just a regular savings account. I'm considering moving them into something that ...

TN - finances advice

I'm Canadian (Toronto) and I will be going to the US (California) for 3 years on TN visa in Jan. 2014; trying to do some financial planning before I leave. I have read some of the other threads but still have the following questions - hoping someone would be willing to help: - Should I close all my ...
