How do I get back TFSA and RRIF withholdings

I'm a dual US/Canadian citizen living in US receiving an inheritance from a Canadian parent. The inheritance included a TFSA and RRIF and the proceeds of these two portions had taxes withheld (since I am in the US and was listed as a beneficiary on both). Since my understanding is that I don't owe t...

Re: Moving gift/inheritance from Canada to US

Thank you so much nelsona - this is very helpful. I'm assuming a wire transfer in US funds would accomplish the same thing as a check? (since currently the borders are closed to travel). Or is it important that the funds move in the form of a check?

Moving gift/inheritance from Canada to US

I'm a Canadian/US dual citizen living in the US and my mother in Canada is elderly and not expected to live long. After discussions with her lawyer she is considering gifting the bulk of her estate (cash/investment) to minimize probate fees and taxes. If she decides to gift the estate now, what is t...

Saving old tax returns

I am a Canadian who has lived in the US for 20 years, and now have dual citizenship. I have RRSP's in Canada and did all the appropriate 8891's, FBAR etc. along the way to declare them. Conventional wisdom says to save tax returns for 7 years. Can I safely shred my old U.S. tax returns, or because o...

I'm a Canadian living in the U.S. and I don't know whether or not I will return to Canada so I'm trying to plan my retirement savings to work well no matter whether I end up in the US or Canada. The other posts indicate that a ROTH is a bad idea in the event I do return to Canada. My other options f...

I am working on filing my 1040X's, and RP-02 23 's for past years as well as 8891's for this year and have two questions. 1. My RRSP account lists me as the account owner and my husband as the beneficiary. Should the 8891 that goes with this account list me or my husband on the "name shown on f...

Shifting money between RRSP's while U.S. resident

I'm a Canadian citizen residing in the U.S. and have several RRSP accounts. One is at a bank and contains GIC's. Another is at an investment firm and contains mutual funds. The bank GIC offerings are very poor right now only offering a couple of percentages in interest. The mutual funds have done ve...

I have just discovered this site and read everything I can about the 8891's, but wanted to clarify a couple of things. I have never filed the 89-45 or the 2002-23 and am a Canadian citizen living in the U.S. since 1994 with RRSP's sitting in accounts and growing. However, I have filed the TD F 90-22...
