Thanks for the advice, nelsona.
I had employment income in 2013 that I earned even though I was a non-resident. My university employment continued for 6 months of 2013 but I was able to work from home (which was in the US). All this was disclosed, and the proper tax accounted for on the non-resident ...

Request to File a Return
Hello,
Today I received a request from the CRA to file a return for 2014. I'm surprised to receive it, because I was a non-resident of Canada for all of 2014, and did not receive any income from Canadian sources that year. I did have income in Canada in 2013 (even though I was a non-resident that ...

Yes, I understood the part about the 217 return raising my tax rate, but that it would not apply to my US income. Therefore a 217 return isn't for me.
I'm working on this myself, no advice from anyone this year. So the (wrong) idea to include my EI income on my Canadian return was entirely my own ...

Thank You! Yes, I was receiving the EI as a parental leave benefit.
They did withhold 25% tax.
I was going to include the EI on my return anyway (and therefore pay a higher rate of tax on that amount). I assumed that was the right thing to do. THank you for saving me some cash!

Hi Nelson. To answer your question:
I was a professor in Canada, and moved to the US in November 2012. From then until June 2013 I kept getting paid, as I was still doing my research for the university, but had no teaching obligations and was not required to be in Canada at all. When I moved, I did ...

NY credit for taxes paid to Canada
I am a NY resident who earned employment income in 2013 in Canada (Ontario). However, I only lived in Ontario for a few days, and certainly don't pass any Canadian residency tests. My Ontario income was fully taxed in Canada and reported on a T4.

Didn't properly dispose of investments before leaving Canada
Hi,
I'm worried that I screwed something up big time. I emigrated from Canada to the US in November 2012 (became a US permanent resident at that time). I did not dispose of my non-registered investments in Canada at that time. They continue to be held in my trading account with TD Waterhouse. I am ...

EI benefits from Canada while US resident
Hello,
This is my first time posting on this forum. Here is my situation. In November 2012 I became a US permanent resident and moved to the US to join my wife who lives and works here. I am a Canadian citizen and until last November I was living in Canada.
