Re: Gameplan for TFSA

thanks @taxesarehardd for your comments. When you said US ETFs, did you mean the ones that trade in NewYork that I can buy after I convert my CAD to USD within my Questrade account?

Gameplan for TFSA

My spouse and I have TFSA accounts with a discount broker invested in ETFs. We are becoming US Legal Permanent Residents end of this month. We would like to keep our accounts for our future retirement in Canada. This forum and senior members are awesome, and I went through several threads on filing ...

Re: Canada/US tax resident - filing first time for both

Hi rao_manoj2004, as per the link below and as per nelsona, you will be a deemed non-resident for Canada since you are a Green-card holder and a resident-alien for the US which has a tax-treaty with Canada... https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/international-non-residents/informatio...

eFile 1040 NR - electronic filing

Good news, IRS now accepts electronic filing of 1040NR. I just filed mine on TaxAct for $12. May be if you search around, you may find cheaper software. I just went with this website as I have used it back when I was a resident in the US.

Thx rlb. I can understand your situation, but you may want to either request a formal credit freeze on your accounts on all 3 bureaus or monitor them annually. If there is a problem or any id theft activity, I guess they can come after you and you will still be obligated to take care of it - no matt...

I agree with you Mikie. So, I have a question to all those folks who have changed the US credit cards to Canadian/foreign addresses. Are you able to request your annual free credit reports from all 3 US credit bureaus just fine via online? If so, do they show your foreign address correctly/properly?

From my experience, the US Credit card companies will not accept foreign addresses. I ended up giving my brother's address. Also did that for the banks and some retirement accounts. Ally bank will put restrictions on withdrawals for foreign address holders. DCU accepted my Canadian address but was m...

I don't see a big problem with this situation. Just file your 1040-NR, and then file your CRA resident tax return. Withholdings are immaterial, only a tax return will be a solid proof of your status and confirmation of the actual taxes you owe. I am not sure how you can expect a US employer to withh...
