Hi Nelsona, I now fully understand. My confusion was that I erroneously thought that "Canadian sourced income" meant "income payed by a Canadian payer". With this corrected then it is all clear now. Thank you for your patience. PS. the delay of 2 months is because i am making pro...

Hi Nelsona, yes, but my question arises as I try to understand the terms "income sourced in Canada" versus "income from work performed in Canada" , given that the payer is a Canadian company. In deriving Canadian NET income for tax purposes, is the GROSS Canadian income the full ...

if overall contract from the canadian company is a total of $50K, with $20K of the work being performed in Canada and the remaiming $30K being done internationally (outside of Canada), is NET income for tax purposes derived from the $20K only ?

ok thanks for the information.
I am currently a permanent resident in a non-treaty country, does this change anything ? Also, would CPP have to be paid as a non-resident only for the portion of the contract that is performed in Canada ?

Hi, I would appreciate clarification on canadian income tax filing requirements for non-resident self-employed contractor performing work in Canada for 60 days in a 200-day contract as follows: - if the total gross amount of the work performed in Canada is $20K, does the individual have the obligati...

thank you Nelson.
For clarification on question (2), say that the overall contract is for 200 days, and only 60 days of work are performed in Canada. Would CRA tax 60 days of the contract only ? or would they tax the entire contract value of 200 days ?

taxation of non-resident canadian with canadian contract

Hi, I am a Canadian citizen who has been a non-resident of Canada for 3+ years. I have an opportunity to work as a contractor for a Canadian company for work to be performed mostly outside of Canada. I will continue to reside outside of Canada, and will only be physically in Canada for about 60 days...

Thanks, This is simpler than what I thought. So say that we depart Dec 15 2013, so we simply file a married/joint 1040 next April for 2013 taxes claiming residency for the full 2013 year (assume there is no income for the last 2 weeks of the year). Is this correct ?. Would the IRS be able to penaliz...

Thanks Nelsona. When you say that Canadians do not need a sailing permit, are you referring to Canadian citizens who will become residents of Canada after departing US ? Or does this apply to Canadian citizens in general regardless of where they will reside after leaving the US ? I have one more que...

Departing US at end of year - filing requirements

Hi, I am trying to understand IRS requirements as I plan my departure from the US at the end of the year. My spouse and I have been in the US for 2 years on temporary work visas which expire at the end of the year. It is clear that I need to obtain a 'Sailing Permit' from IRS within a month of my de...

I would appreciate a clarification to the thread above for my specific/similar situation. We plan to depart the US at the end of December; we will invalidate my L1 visa (and my spouse's L2 visa) at the time of departure. From the thread above, as Canadian citizens we would be allowed to do a 1040 jo...

Thank you Nelsona.
I am surprised by the short time I will have to depart the US after my work status 'expires'; I was thinking that I had more leeway. Your information is very valuable for my planning.

Leaving the US upon expiration of temporary work visa

Hi, I will be moving out of the US when my TN work visa expires a few months from now. I would appreciate any guidance on what the US rules are in regards to my 'departure' once the work visa has expired, ie.: - how soon after my work visa expiration I am expected to move out of the US ? - does the ...
