Hence the wink wink nod nod! Yes, migration is the way of all animals, for whatever purposes. Just having a "worry day" about privacy, sovereignty, etc. and feeling sorry for those who are simply collateral damage because of people like me. Guess it hurts to grow up! Thanks so much for you...

nelsona: "Shrug. Your spouse has a legitimate gripe. You,. however, can always renounce your citizensip." Yes, citizens of the non-US world can gripe, but to no avail. And, yes, to shedding the burden. In the end, it is my fault for making assumptions about things, and it has always been m...

Quote from "nelsona": The spousal association to trust is coming down the pike, just not here yet. Simply be prepared. You're not going to find direct info on any IRS site on this." Thank you for responding. So, yes, we will need to become U.S./IRS spies? Not to make light of this dev...

"My wife has a personal RRSP, is that a foreign trust for 3520 purposes? Her personal bank accounts? FBAR required?" I try to read as many new posts as possible in order to keep up with developments, changes, news, etc. and came across this comment even though I don't use RESP's, and perha...

My reading of the instructions for the RRSP's filed on Form 8891 is that 3520's don't have to be filed - in my case anyway. Please don't tell me I messed that up, too!!

I actually didn't finish my sentence correctly when I typed: "one showing a $0 balance and the new account number with the proper amount". Should have written the following regarding filing two 8891's: "one with the old account number showing a $0 balance and one with the new account ...

Sorry - I actually did some more searching and found the answer to my questions on an earlier post on this forum (March 2012). It seems that indeed I will have to file TWO 8891's for the same account, one showing a $0 balance and the new account number with the proper amount. I still plan to get a l...

8891 Reporting Changed Acct. Number

Well, just as I thought I had things under control, a wrench in the wheelworks: My bank (Scotiabank) changed my RRSP account number because my old account number was not compatible with their new software. Apparently, their software would not accept my existing number. They gave me no notification o...

Wow, this info about the TIN for the account is new to me. I have never heard of such a thing and didn't know that a specific account could even have a TIN!! I thought that TIN meant Taxpayer Identification Number and was for people who don't actual have a SSN, for example NRA's who for some reason ...

Hi again CdnAmerican,

Forgot to ask if your TFSA had mutual funds or was it the straight forward savings account?

Thanks again.

Hi CdnAmerican, Thanks for the response. The problem with my TFSA is that it is invested in mutual funds and it seems that it might require Form 8621, which is the real problem form. I did see the posts about the 3520 & 3520-A here which will help somewhat, but the Form 8621 is the real problem....

TFSA-With Mutual Funds

It looks like I made a big mistake in June 2011 when I opened a Bank of Nova Scotia TFSA with the $$ in mutual funds. As a U.S. citizen and Canadian permanent resident, I was very naive and didn't know about the implications of this until after the tax revelations in Sept. 2011. Even then, I didn't ...
