Nelsona & JGCA , many thanks for the comments. I believe at this time that I have a good understanding of how this process works. I can now appreciate that w.r.t. pension splitting, filing jointly for some people may be the preferred option.

If it is the husbands pension that is being split, I would assume that he would report the full pension and take a foreign tax credit for taxes paid. If it is the wife's pension that is being split, I believe that the pension spit to the husband and the corresponding taxes transferred to the husband...

In my case the pension splitting is my wife's pension, who is Canadian so from your comment, it will not be reported to IRS.
