Thanks again,

one last question - is the witholding tax payable on the "actual" or "taxable" amount of dividends?

I should add as well that we're talking about a pretty small amound of income - a few hundred dollars, so the witholding tax is going to be about 30-40$ CAD. Perhaps the CRA won't even care, but I worry about incurring their scrutiny....

thanks for your quick reply.. incidentally, I did file a proper departure return last year, and did a deemed disposition of the mutual funds (I discussed this at the time with the broker so imagine my surprise to receive a T5 this year). I had a T5 for the dividends last year; at the time I didn't u...

non-resident witholding tax on Canadian source dividends

Hi, I'm a Canadiancitizen/UK resident. I left Canada in early 2009 but there was a cock up with a small mutual fund account I hold back in Canada - essentially, despite several conversations with them, they neglected to keep back the necessary witholding tax and some dividends I received and sent a ...

OK - so with respect to residence, essentially what you're saying is that any number of secondary residency ties in Canada don't matter as long as you are habitually resident, and considered a resident for tax purposes, of the UK. Thanks for the info: With respect to liquidating the assets - can they demand I do this? I understand that I can't trade as a non-resident but muy intent was just to let the funds sit (as they've been doing for the last 10 years or so). I know of other people who have just let these accounts sit so ...

PS - unravelling?

PS: my accoutant has said that if/when I go back to Canada the 'disposition of property' for my mutual funds can be 'unravelled'. Is this necessary? If so, what are the benefits of doing this?

T5 for divident income

Hi there, I am a a Canadian living in the UK (canadian non-resident for tax purposes based on tax treaty). My parents recently received a T5 for some dividends from a mutual fund account that I set up years ago when I still lived in Canada. Essentially, I did a deemed disposition of property with my...
