I forgot this as well -

When calculating the FICA write-off, do I add the FICA amount to the "Foreign Taxes paid" or is there somewhere else on the T-1 that I put this?

Thanks!

Thanks for your response, nelsona. It clears things up somewhat, Can she claim FICA in the 2008 Tax Year as well? Or did that start in the 2009 Tax Year when the 401K write-off started? I'm doing her 2008 returns now and I am using software - correct. I'm assuming I might have to "intervene&quo...

Reporting Income from US Tax Return on CDN Tax Return

My wife is American and works over in Michigan. She files "Married Filing Separately" in the US. When I do her Canadian tax return: 1. Do I use the amount from line 22 on the 1040 as her income for Canadian tax purposes, or do I use the "Gross Pay" amount from her W-2 Earnings Su...

401K Hardship Withdrawal - Reporting

Situation: Wife is a US CItizen and daily commuter to the USA to Work. She is a Permanent Resident of Canada, and resides in Canada. She withdrew a chunk of her 401K in 2009 to buy our house. Because the 401K was already taxed by the CRA in previous years, does she have to report this as foreign inc...

Thanks nelsona....

Got it all figured out now I think....

I'll go ahead and do the 50% because it'll give us a bit of a refund that she can throw onto her Canadian balance...we'd rather deal with the CRA and not the IRS.

In other words, we'd rather owe to one entity instead of two :-)

Thanks again, nelsona..... Next question relates to the Principal Residence: 1. Because she owns 50% of our actual Principal Residence here in Canada, can she write of 50% of the Property Tax or 100% of the Property Tax on the Principal Residence? 2. Likewise, can she write off 50% or 100% of the mo...

Thanks, nelsona! For clarification purposes.... 1. She does not have to report that she has an interest in both homes correct? She just reports the rental income by filing a Schedule E. 2. When I do the T776 for Canadian Income Tax, do I fill it out at 100% or at 70%? If I fill it out at 70%, do I h...

Wife is American - Lives in Canada - Commutes daily

Here is my situation - My wife is American and lives in Canada. She commutes daily to the USA to work. I am Canadian and I am employed in Canada. Here are my questions: 1. We purchased a home in 2009 and also purchased a rental home in 2009. She is on both mortgages. For Canadian tax purposes, we in...
