Notice of Assessment

When I left Houston, I had a forwarding address with US Postal to my Canadian address. I was wondering what Notice of Assessment would be sent by IRS to confirm the final tax bill? The cheque cleared my bank account, but I never received anything from IRS. I subsequently sent in a change of address ...

Nelsona, luckily I read your forum again, as I was not aware of the conversion problem of Roth for NR. I was well aware of your advice to convert to Roth before I left, but did not have the time to do it as I left in a hurry. Which is better? Leave it in 401k or convert to an IRA? What are the diffe...

W8 or W8BEN?

I am living currently in Canada. I had an employment in US, and has recently been notified that I could either leave my 401k as is, or roll it over to a IRA. I made an application to roll it over to an IRA, but the service provider has now requested for a Form 8 or Form 9 to be filled. Since I am no...

I did not have any problems like that when I informed them of my change of residence status. They had me refund the Child Tax Benefit but for the correct period. I wrote in with a letter rather than a phone call though, which might avoid the problems you might have had.

Hi Nelsona,

I panicked for no reason at all - no one asked me for the document or stopped me. I am back in Canada - your advice on tax treatment was spot on - got my tax refund.

If I understand this correctly, then I can deduct the RRSP contribution from the gross salary, and also add the payroll taxes to the total taxes paid as the total foreign tax credit. After entering these data in TurboTax, it will apply foreign income exclusion and foreign tax deduction, and whatever...

I did not realize that you were describing the tax paid for 1040 return. I get it that I use box 24 as dividend income, but do not understand how to calculate the tax paid on the dividend. TurboTax is no help on the foreign income part of it. Do I used the dividend tax credit that CRA calculated as ...
