insurance proceeds Canada vs US

It was mentions several years ago, I think, but will ask again. Is there a difference between how Canada and the US tax or don't tax insurance proceeds?

While I know that the RRSP needs to be identified on the form, does the RRIF that was created from a pension fund?

If the source of an RRIF is a part of one's pension, does it still need to have an 8891 form filled out?

The person who told us this was a tax accountant who did taxes in both countries. And, no, we were not asking for an extention. He said it had to do with delaying the taxes on our RRSPs.

We are dual citizens living in Canada for many years. And, we have for years been putting this quoted statement at the top of our 1040s.
