Hi Nelsona,

Thank you for your reply.

If I file a 1040NR, since the amount I withdrew is very small, I will get zero income tax after deduction. Then I only need to pay 10% penalty. Is that right?

Thank you again.

Canadian 401k withdrawal

Hello, I'm a Canadian and live in Canada. I have a 1042-s for my 401k withdrawal in 2014 (small amount, less than $2000). This is my only US source income. The tax withholding rate is 15% (I filled W8BEN). Does this tax withheld satisfy my tax liability for US so I don't need to file my US tax retur...

Hi nelsona,

One more question.

Since I was not in US in 2011, do I still need to enter my occupation in 1040NR?

Thank you

How to get tax refund for the bonus?

I had worked for a company in US as a TN worker, and then went back to Canada in 2010. I have lived in Canada since then. In 2011, the company gave me a small amount of bonus (less than $2000) with deductions made for income, social security, and medicare taxes. Can I claim back the withheld taxes? ...

Thank you, nelsona.

One more question. For the interest from the US bank saving account, should it be reported as Tax-exempt interest, or it doesn't need to be reported since it's not the US source income.

I didn't work for a while after I went back to Canada. So in 2010, my main employment place was in US. Does that mean that my tax home (needs to be filled in 8840) was US and prevent me to claim has a closer connection with Canada?

Thanks

Hi nelsona, Thank you for your reply. I have gone back to Canada. My family and I live in Canada now. My family never leave Canada and we have a permant home here. I worked less than 183 days in US in 2010, but I still meet SPT because of previous year's days. In my case, can I just fill 1040NR plus...

non-immigration status change

In 2010, I worked several months in US as a TN worker, and then went back to Canada. Does it mean that I have changed my nonimmigrant status? When filling 1040NR, should I answer Yes to the following question: Have you ever changed your visa type (nonimmigrant status) or U.S. immigration status? Tha...

Thank you, nelsona. Some more questions: If my us source income is less than $10,000, do I still need to fill 8833? In the form 8833, (1)Line 2 (List the Internal Revenue provision(s) overruled or modified by the treaty-based return position), don't know how to fill it, or can I leave it blank? (2)L...

Thank you, nelsona.

My income in the US was in 3 forms: (1) Form W-2, Wage; (2) Form 1099-G, State Income Tax Refunds, about $40; (3)bank interest, a couple of dollars. Do I need to fill 8833 for each of them?

Thanks again

TN worker with family in Canada

I have a TN visa and work in US for more than 183 days in 2009. My wife lives in Canada and has a full time jobs. We also own a house in Canada. Can I still use 1040NR for my tax return? If so, do I need to fill 8840 or 8833?

Thanks

I am going to file 1040NR-EZ. No spouse information in this form. Does that mean that my wife doesn't need a ITIN?

Thank you

Nelsona, thank you for your reply.

But how do I fill the "Spouse's Social Security Number" in IL-1040 form? My wife doesn't have SSN.
